LISA McCLEARY

The works above examine sexting navigated through ephemeral communication technology and evaluates the act of subverting private sexual transmissions. My practice is an amalgamation of text and image, which relates to the primary means of communication on social media. The emoji is a signifier of the Snapchat application and an extension of online discourse in contemporary culture. This embroidery transforms the ephemeral sext from private into public and connotes the narrative of this type of sexual communication. It relays the format and color scheme of the communication technology used to navigate these communications online. I am interested in time-consuming mediums, which highlight the ephemeral features of the Snapchat application through counterpoint. The mediums I use to play with gender bias; I am subverting craft forms viewed as predominantly female, both historically and traditionally, such as tapestry and embroidery, through the concept and context of my practice.
